33.00MHz A Data Signal

A digital signal on 33.00MHz has been received in Australia and New Zealand when TEP opens. I can receive it from the morning to the evening weakly.

Todd Emslie had found a similar signal on 33.375MHz so I googled with a search word '33.375mhz'. The result was 17, 16 of them were about a Chinese law for the communications with fishing boats (An English translation of the law).

This law defines that 33.000MHz is a control channel in ASK; 33.375 and 33.425MHz are non-emergency call channels in MSK.

As many people have thought, Japan also may have some digital TX on 33.000MHz. I have to look up on the telecom's license search but with the old search system I had to search hundreds times so I could not. From April 2011, with a new search system I have to search only 47 times so I will do it soon.

Result of the search on 24 Nov 2011: I searched with the condition '32-34MHz' for 47 Japanese prefectures. The result was one item: '33.47MHz N0N 5W portable for prop test. Telecom Engineering Center'. Also I think JSDF is using these frequencies.

40.69MHz and Alaskan A2

40.6896MHz has been an excellent indicator for Alaska. This signal comes from AMBCS, ... Anchorage is at 5,134km in QTF38 from here.

I received 40.689 633 5 on 05 JUN 2011. At 0730z S5, 0746z S5, 0805z S6, (took a dinner,) and at 0902z nil. Received audio:

Here is a reception list of 40.69 from 2002. The propagation modes were F2 until 2002, Es since 2006. Why I could not receive it with Es until 2006?

Until ASO (analogue switch off) in USA, 55.23997-55.24000 Anchorage had been received often with 40.69, and sometimes 55.26000-55.26006 Fairbanks.

Here is a reception list of Alaskan A2 from 2000. I could not receive them until 2006 (same as 40.69), why? Also, why I could not receive them with F2?

My last reception of Alaskan A2 was on 7 May 2009. When the AMBCS 40.69 was heard again on 20 June 2009 I watched 55.24 very carefully but I could not detect any signals so I think the ASO in Alaska was on same date as the USA's ASO 12 June 2009.

But according to the wikipedia, ...

Fairbanks is at 5,213km in QTF33 from here.

E2 in southeast Asia: I heard 48.26032 48.26041 48.26046 in 2011 summer. No report of 48.24/48.25 in this year from JA.

[2011 NOV 11] I made a table below and realized that 48.26041 and 48.26046 were never received at the same time, so maybe these are from same QTH. You can see 48.26046 was used for several days then 48.26041 was used for severel days, alternately. 48.26032 is usually much weaker than 48.2604.

[2012 JAN 12] I made a calendar below and found that in 2009 Phrae's frequency had switched before/after Friday. On 2009 JUN 09, both frequency were used (see the table above). In 2010, maybe same way.

The Warblers

49.749?, 49.750, another 49.750?, 57.703(found on 27AUG2012), 57.749, 57.750, 65.750, 77.250

The warbler 49.750 have been thought from Vladivostok. It is at 859km in QTF299 from here. VK4CP could receive the 49.75 warlber 24hrs at Longkou, about 1808km QTF269 from here.

I do not have any directional antennas. When I went to a high school JA7YAF for '6m and down contest' I monitored 49.75 as follow:

110703 01xx 49.750A QTF roughly 270-280 (with 8el at JA7YAF)

I can hear the warbler 49.750 everyday in our Es season. It suggests (at least one of) the warblers is located in roughly 1,200-2,000km from here. Then another question arises: where is Vladivostok?

An old Article

I found an old article on the warblers in my hard-disk:

I think this was the old Vladivostok: 11MAY2004 2225z 49.749MHz USB. This warbling carrier had been heard until 2007 or early 2008.

Since 19MAY2008 a new warbler appeared and it was heard everyday in the Es season: 30OCT2009 0912z 49.749MHz USB

Sometimes two warbler's were received at the same time: 05JUN2008 2345z 49.749MHz USB

I thought at first the Vladivostok transimtter was tweaked in late 2007 or early 2008 and the one of the new warbler's was Vladivosok.

But similar warbling carriers were received on C2 57.75, C3 65.75, C4 77.25 since MAY 2008: 06JUN2008 0719z 57.749MHz USB. I think these type carriers were never heard before 2008(need to check my log).

DPRK?

This is written in 2012: I heard Korean audio on 56.25 only once. I think this had northern Korean accent, but China may have a few Korean station.

2013: A north Korean audio was often heard on 56.16-56.17, its video freq was 49.7491AVMHz.

2014: A nort Korean audio was heard on 56.25 once with strong video 49.7487. No audio was heard 56.16-56.17 with 49.7491 so far (on 11 Jun 2014).

Central Asian R1

Until some years ago, I can hear 2 weird carriers at around 49.7396MHz. Now only 1? Also there was a wowing carreir at 49.7604, but it disappeared several years ago.

50MHz

Around 50.1MHz

Music or voice in AM or FM mode have been sometimes received around 50.1MHz in JA, in southeast Asia, and sometimes in VK(also in ZL?). In 2011 autumn (OCT/NOV), 50.080 was received in JA2,3, sounded like Vietnamese or something.

Some of them may be a subharmonics of FM transmitters on 100.2MHz?

I found a CD/DVD player used by my father transmits its audio on around 50.24AVMHz.

'Mobile beacons' in JA3

When I have a propagation to JA3, I can hear several un-id stations which are talking from their automobiles on 50.04 and 50.9-54MHz. 50.04 was once heard in ZL!

55.275MHz a Drifter

There had been a 55.2512AMHz modulated by 60Hz with a fast warble until 2008 but I could not catch it in 2009. I found 55.2524AMHz a warbly carrier in 2010 and heard it for several times in that year. It had a similar warble as 55.2512 but was always weak (maybe because of too bad Es year).

I heard 55.271-55.277AVMHz drifting carrier modulated by 60Hz a few times in 2011, instead of 55.2524. Do these come from same QTH?

66.75 video / 73.25 audio have been often received in JA but I can hear nothing on around these frequencies here in my 10+ years reception history. It probably means that it is located around 2100km or more from here.

A DXer Mr Hasegawa in Nagoya supposes that it is located in around Anhui province, Hangzhou, Shanghai or so. I can hear very east part of Anhui here so I think it is located in around central or west of Anhui province.

NOTE: J7 (188-194MHz) and J8 (192-198MHz) have a 2MHz width of overlap 192-194MHz. The reason have not been a famous story, almost completely forgotten (I read about this only once in my 42 years life).

The IF frequency of Japanese monochrome TV sets was decided to 27MHz video, 22.5MHz audio in 1953, and 26.75 / 22.25MHz in 1960. For example, to view J4 170-176MHz the local oscilator generated 198MHz (= 171.25 + 26.75) so if J8 was allocated to 194-200MHz the 198MHz LO would cause a interference to J8. Also J5 and J9, J6 and J10, J7 and J11 had a same problem.

J11 have been at 210-216MHz. After the US Forces Japan's RADAR on 220MHz+/- QRT, J12 was allocated to TV. It was discussed which would be better to allocate 214-220MHz to avoid LO interference from J8 or 216-222MHz to avoid the overlap.

In Japanese analogue color TV sets, the IF have been 58.75/54.25MHz so these interferences never happened, but because of the overlap J7 still could not be used near the J8 transmitters. For example Tokyo tower had a very high power J8 TX, and also Morioka in JA7 (450km from Tokyo tower) had a high power J8 TX. So J7 was almost never used not only in JA1 but in almost all JA7 prefectures excluding the northest prefecture Aomori which is located at more than 500km from Tokyo, 100km from Morioka.

I am located in northern Morioka, at 469km north of Tokyo tower, and I could catch J8 from Tokyo tower often in summer with a casual home TV system.

The ASO in Japan

The ASO in Japan was done on 24 July 2011. I monitored 91.25MHz (RX was set to 91.249MHz USB).
At 23:59:00JST(1459z), the red line NHK Tokyo 91.250 000 1MHz stopped. Next, at 23:59:29JST another 91.250 000 1MHz (presumed HBC Sapporo) stopped. At 23:59:56JST, a weak carrier on 91.249 865 1MHz stopped (ABS Akita Hoso / Kakunodate? 3W, 54km over high mountains QTF256). At 00:00:00JST(1500z) their licenses expired. Weak sidebands were by J1- Tohoku Hoso 91.239 990MHz in Sendai S9.

J1 ASO at 2359JST on 24 Jul 2011

You can see the program-off of 6 Tokyo analog TV stations at 1200JST (0300z) and the c/off of 6 Tokyo analog TV stations at 2359JST (1459z) on YouTube. From left to right on the upper side, J1 NHK General Tokyo, J4 NTV, J6 TBS, and lower side, J8 Fuji TV, J10 TV Asahi, J12 TV Tokyo. Note: Tokyo had also J3 NHK Edu. Tokyo, J14 Tokyo Metropolitan TV, J16 University on the Air.

In three prefectures severely damaged by the mega-earthquake and tsunami, Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, the ASO will be delayed to 31 Mar 2012.

I live in Iwate so I can use my local NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation, Japanese national public broadcasting organization) JOQG 531kHz and JOQG-TV 171.260 010MHz as frequency references for more several months.

Is JOQG 531kHz accurate?

I measured JOYR San-yo Hoso 1494.0000kHz. JOYR has 6 relay stations on the same frequency so their frequencies are synchronized within +/- 0.1Hz to reduce QSB.

FFT error is around 0.1Hz so I think JOQG is accurate.

GPS Arrived

I bought a GPS module with a 10kHz output Jupiter TU60 for 38 Euro (free P&P) from Hongkong. It arrived here on 23 FEB 2012.

Test circuit

The 10kHz output is connected to the ground terminal of IC-706mkIIG via 1k ohm.

Test 1

Assuming that JOQG and JOQG-TV are accurate, a harmonic 200.000MHz of 10kHz output was measured as 199,999,999.9Hz (FFT error was +/-0.1Hz).

Test 2

I waited until the module was locked to 4 GPS satellites. The 50th harmonic of the 10kHz output was read as 500.001 4kHz on IC-706mkIIG, and JOQG was read as 531.0014kHz, so the true frequency of JOQG was 531.000 0kHz(+/-0.1Hz). Similarly, JOQG-TV was measured as 171.260 010 0MHz(+/-0.1Hz).

I found that my e-mail server at ictnet.ne.jp often rejects e-mails written in English as SPAMs. I stopped the SPAM filter in Sep 2012 so I think I can now receive all e-mails to me. If you sent me some e-mails before and you don't have my reply, will you please send your e-mails again.
